Dr. Carroll Behrhorst, a family physician from Winfield Kansas, travels to Guatemala as a Lutheran medical missionary and is stationed in Antigua, Guatemala.
During his first two years in Guatemala, Doc was required to re-establish himself as a Guatemalan licensed medical doctor. Concurrent with restoring clinic services in Antigua, Doc visited nearby Chimaltenango, the “cabecera” or capital of the department of Chimaltenango, home to the Kaqchikel Maya. The contrasts between Antigua and Chimaltenango were evident, particularly in the area of medical services. Antigua had them; Chimaltenango had almost none. Doc found himself devoting larger amounts of time in Chimaltenango than Antigua, drawn by the needs of the impoverished and underserved Kaqchikeles.
