Santa Apolonia

At an average 7,200 feet above sea level and bordered by the municipalities of Tecpán and San Juan Comalapa, Santa Apolonia is a smaller municipality in terms of population with only 18,540 inhabitants living within its 60 square mile area. The population is primarily Indigenous (92.8%) and inhabits the town of Santa Apolonia as well as the municipality’s 17 villages and 18 hamlets. The municipality is known for its handicrafts, particularly earthenware pottery. Agriculture is the primary economic activity with corn, black beans, snow peas, carrots, onions, tomatoes, peaches, and passion fruit being some of the key crops cultivated here. ALDEA and ABPD partnered with the municipality of Santa Apolonia from 2013-2019.
