1976 - An Earthquake Shakes the Nation

For Chimaltecos, February 4, 1976, was their 9/11.

People who survived recount that day as the pivotal point in their mind’s calendar. “Yes, that was before the earthquake,” or “No, it happened after the earthquake.”

It was the earthquake-proof hospitalito, built just six years earlier, which provided emergency care.

For the U.S.-based BCF Board, it was significant. We placed a small ad in the New York Times, letting people know that BCF, Inc. would receive donations to help victims of the earthquake. The response was overwhelming. Now BCF had funds to help rebuild after the earthquake, thanks to responsive donors. Though the hospitalito had held strong, the clinic had collapsed and needed to be rebuilt.
