50th Anniversary Mini-Tour!

Mini-Tour is June 18-21, 2017 based in Antigua, Guatemala

Cost is $295 per person; all-inclusive except airfare and hotel. Tour price includes the $50 cost of Sunday’s Fundraising Celebration Dinner.

Hotel Aurora is the tour base hotel, 2 blocks from Central Park, 4th Avenida Calle Oriente, #16. Single at $76.50; double at $81; triple at $89. Taxes and continental breakfast included. Rooms have been blocked for ALDEA; actual by-name reservations can be made direct under ALDEA by phone or online at hotelauroraantigua.com. The number of rooms is limited; first-come, first-served. MINI-TOUR ITINERARY (subject to change):

Sunday, June 18:
Arrive at Guatemala City airport (GUA) no later than 2:30 PM. Meet at the airport with shuttle to Antigua-an hour away. Check in at Hotel Aurora. Welcome and Tour Orientation. Attend 50th Anniversary Celebration at Hotel Porta Antigua. Social Hour with Cash Bar at 5:30 PM; Celebration Dinner at 6:30 PM.

Monday, June 19:

  • Breakfast at hotel.
  • Visit ALDEA/ABPD office in Chimaltenango to meet ABPD staff and receive a briefing of current programs by ABPD Executive Director, Paco Enriquez, and hear firsthand staff testimonials of their work in the villages.
  • Visit the Behrhorst Clinic for tour and update with one of Doc’s grandsons and ALDEA Board Member, Jonathan Maupin.
  • Return to Antigua for lunch followed by chat updates on the current social/political/economic situation in Guatemala and health of families in the Mayan Highlands.
  • Social with ALDEA/ABPD board members.
  • Dinner in Antigua.

Tuesday, June 20:

  • Breakfast at hotel.
  • Travel to two partner Mayan villages to meet with villagers. First visit one village without ALDEA/ABPD projects but committed to starting when funds are in place followed by a picnic lunch in the area, then visit a village with all ALDEA/APBD environmental and empowerment projects completed.
  • Return to Antigua for dinner and processing session of current program, results, observations, today, tomorrow, and participation in the Dr.  Carroll Behrhorst Legacy Society.

Wednesday, June 21:

  • Breakfast at hotel.
  • Shuttle to Guatemala City airport for flight departures to the U.S. OR
  • Begin any additional post-tour travel planned on your own.


  1. The minimum age for participation is 21.
  2. Participants should consider trip insurance and will be asked to sign a liability waiver upon arrival.
  3. A current U.S. passport is required. No vaccinations are necessary, but it is always advisable to have your tetanus shot up to date.
  4. Weather in the Guatemalan Highlands is normally pleasant year-round with June daytime temperatures reaching into the high 70s/low 80s F and night temps in the high 50s/low 60s F. Some rain can be expected.

You are welcome to arrive in Antigua on Saturday and participate in optional, pay-as-you-go activities of your choice on Saturday and Sunday. Download our list of activity options here.
