Our walkers completed their 50K challenge on April 24!
We exceeded our 50K fundraising goal with $54,050 raised to support Mayan families! Thank you to everyone who made this a great success!
On April 24, 2017, José, Paco, and Jessica (left, at the start of the 50K route and right, at the end) completed their third, and hardest physically challenging fundraiser to date! They hiked 50 kilometers from the municipality of Patzún to the Peace Park in Santiago Atitlán, on the shores of Lake Atitlán. This group has climbed as many as 4 volcanoes in 3 days during past fundraisers, but this was their most difficult feat yet! In just 9.5 hours, they hiked 50K (that’s 31.5 miles) starting at an altitude of about 7,000 feet, with steep ascents and descents throughout the trip. While the Walk was difficult, our hikers were motivated to complete it in support of our partner communities, where women exert great strength every day carrying water and firewood for their families.
The Walk to Support Mayan Communities commemorates ALDEA’s 50th anniversary year while raising funds that will help our vital programs endure into the future. The map below shows the route, highlighting 1 kilometer for every $1,000 raised.
