Community Life:
- Pachaj was founded 80 years ago. Since then, the village has grown to 50 families.
- 100 percent of the population are evangelicals and 98 percent of them are indigenous.
- The village is located almost 1.8 miles from the county seat of Santa Apolonia.
- There is no school at the village. Students have to walk to Santa Apolonia to receive classes. There approximately 40 children who walk from their village to school.
- Pachaj’s name means “among pine trees.”
- For medical services, people need to travel to Santa Apolonia, using public transportation which is available twice a week.
- The community has had electric service for 15 years.
- Roads are 80 percent unpaved (in good condition) and 20 percent are paved.
- The families from Pachaj are mainly engaged in subsistence agriculture, producing corn and beans for their own consumption. They also plant potatoes, peas, carrots and strawberries that represent a livelihood for families.
